Learn About

Our story

The What, Why, Where, When, & Who

“We want students to own their learning; You don’t learn anything unless you decide to learn it.”

Teri Hein

Founder

The What

The Bureau of Fearless ideas

is a non-profit learning organization where young people ages 6-18 are inspired by words and discover their creative voice.

The Why

We believe that words,

well written and well-spoken, can create opportunity, invite possibility and empower young people to be the authors of their own futures. When we share our stories and listen to others with genuine interest, we gain understanding, build empathy, and the world becomes a better place.

The Where

FEARLESS IDEAS HAS PLURAL BUREAUX

(try saying that three times fast). That “X” on the end of the word “Bureau” means we have more than one of them!

GREENWOOD BUREAU

8414 Greenwood Ave. N.
Seattle, WA 98103

(206) 725-2625

Our first and largest location with more than 1800 square feet of space solely for educational programs and community events. Visitors enter through our storefront, the Greenwood Space travel Supply Co. (offices are in the very back).

YESLER TERRACE BUREAU

221 10th Ave. S. #174
Seattle, WA 98104

(206) 712-2445

Our newest location (since 2017) is on the ground floor of Hoa Mai Gardens Building (enter off S. Washington St.) It has 1300 square feet of learning space for youth from community households and nearby schools.

Wherever our doors open,

inside is a space that belongs first and foremost to the students who fill it; different from school, different from home, it’s a place that’s theirs.

While the mission remains the same wherever we go, each surrounding community has its own unique stories and style. By being attuned to and engaging with the surrounding community, we make a space where families and community leaders are welcome, and students can feel fully supported.

2005

Teri Hein starts a non-profit writing and tutoring center (originally incorporated on paper as Pencilhead). Before it can open its doors, in early 2005, Teri is invited to make her fledgling tutoring center part of 826 National, the brainchild of acclaimed author and philanthropist Dave Eggers. Teri agrees and 826 Seattle is opened in the Greenwood space a few months later!

2006

826 Seattle holds the first of many Mustache-a-Thon fundraisers and begins a long tradition of hosting the wackiest, most fun fundraising events in the Greater Seattle area! Other such events include Dance Your Cash Off, Let Them Eat Cake Birthday Cake Campaign (still in effect), Ekphrastic Art Auction, and the Face You Fear Challenge. But Fearless Ideas’ crown jewel of unconventional extravaganzas is People Eating and Giving, a gala, fundraising, dinner, variety show, rock concert, and hullabaloo!

2007

“826 Seattle Writes the Rain” is published – a compilation of stories about the Pacific NW. It serves as the precursor for Fearless Ideas’ perennial anthology of student and professional authors: “What to Read in the Rain”

2010

As usual, 826 Seattle finds itself in the middle of a controversy involving the solar system. Staging a protest march and rally to demand that celestial body Pluto be upgraded from “Dwarf Star” status, and be able to reclaim its rightful “Planet” status!

2011

826 Seattle founder Teri Hein and Ballard High School student Meron Kasah travel to the White House to receive an award from First Lady Michelle Obama. The award recognized our effectiveness in developing learning and life skills in young people by engaging them through the power of the written word.

2013

Mayor Mike McGinn awards 826 Seattle with the Mayor’s Arts Award for Future Focus. This award celebrates the people and organizations that broaden our horizons and humanize our city and our world.

2014

By 2014 with long waiting lists for all programs and an impressive list of awards, 826 Seattle decided to further develop its offerings and to rebrand under its new name: The Greater Seattle Bureau of Fearless Ideas.

2016

As the dust settles from a gas explosion across the street from Fearless Ideas, Teri announces her retirement. Growth is in the air as Andy Herbst arrives to be the second Executive Director of Fearless Ideas. Andy tackles the long-time ambition of opening a second location, expands the staff, and ushers in comprehensive health coverage for Bureau employees.

2017

With the renaissance of the Yesler Terrace community, Seattle Housing Authority invites Fearless Ideas to make its second home in the brand new, fully subsidized housing building, Hoa Mai Gardens. As displaced residents return to their new home, Fearless Ideas becomes an early contributor to continuing the legacy of a historic community.

2018

Germany calls and Andy must bring his family together in his homeland. As we bid him a fond farewell, Fearless Ideas welcome Erica Mullen as our third Executive Director. With a fresh perspective, Erica and the staff begin the exciting work of re-imagining the organization’s potential and deepening its commitment to equity, inclusion and the empowerment of youth to be the authors of their own future.
